Gold Kist Farms Silos
Formally owned by Gold Kist Farm, the property was sold in 1989 to a neighboring business.
It's not clear what these silos were used for, as Gold Kist Farms had variety of fields it worked within. The silos had a small auger in the bottom of them, and had a railway running to them. The main purpose of the silos appeared to be to deliver something into the top of them from train cars. My guess is that it was for gain deliveries to feed chickens with.
Gold Kist was founded in 1933 by David Brooks, a University of Georgia agronomy instructor. It started out as a cooperative called the Cotton Producers Association. It quickly grew and moved into other fields, including fertilizer, farming supplies and later poultry. Gold Kist stopped working in the aforementioned fields to focus on primarily chicken and pork products. In 2004 it converted to a for-profit company. It was acquired by Pilgrim's Pride in 2006. Pilgrim's Pride has a large poultry production plant just north of Live Oak.
While the original plant no longer appears to be standing, the adjoining property interestingly houses a farmer's cooperative.
The Gold Kist Farms brand currently operates as a producer of chicken for schools, grades K-12.
