VATS Cranking Fuel Enable Signal

The final piece of VATS is the Cranking Fuel Enable signal.

There are two ways to eliminate this last part. Either get a new ECM chip burned with VATS eliminated from the programming, or build your own "VATS Sim Chip" that will send the proper signal to the ECM.

When VATS has not detected anything wrong and is working properly, it will send a 5v 30Hz signal to the ECM to tell it to enable the fuel injection system during cranking. Once the the engine is running, it no longer needs this signal. If the VATS system has tripped, this signal is killed and therefore the ECM will not enable the fuel injection system to start the engine with.

Bypass Method #1: Reprogram ECM Chip

The easiest, but most expensive method is to get a new ECM chip burned by a reputable company such as pcmforless.com. They can remove the programing, and need for the VATS signal in the ECM.

While they are at it, have pcmforless.com program the chip for any modifications you may have done to your car. Even if the car is stock, you will still gain some horsepower and other positive effects such as better starting and the removal of error codes you don't need.

Bypass Method #2: Create SIM Chip

To make a VATS Sim Chip, you will need the following VATS Signal Simulator schematic by RedRose of CorvetteForum.com

Below is a list of each part required along with a picture of said item.

Part Name Radio Shack Part # Price Item Image
LM555 Precision Timer (8-Pin DIP) 273-1723 $1.49
8-Pin Retention Contact 276-1995 $.69
NPN Transistors (15-Pack) 276-1617 $2.59
0.1µF 50V Hi-Q Ceramic Disc Capacitor Pk/2 272-135 $1.29
Silicon Switching Diodes (50-Pack) 276-1620 $2.59
Wire Tap-In Squeeze Connectors (10-Pack) 64-3052 $1.99
Some short wire scraps will also be needed so that you can wire this into your wiring harness with the tap connectors once completed.

Shown below is a photo by RedRose of his completed Sim Chip.

Once the chip has been created, using tap connectors, connect it directly into the ECM wiring harness as noted in table below. There is no need to cut any wires, as the tap connectors are inline connectors and are able to be removed with no harm to your harness wires.
